What are exercise physiologists?

An exercise physiologist, as an allied health professional, specializes in crafting tailored fitness and exercise regimens aimed at preventing and managing chronic diseases and injuries. Their expertise ensures patients achieve their optimal physical health. Individuals grappling with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer can greatly benefit from the targeted therapy provided by exercise physiologists.

Benefits of Exercise Physiology

Professional athletes and individuals who maintain a regular exercise routine not only exhibit a healthier appearance but also experience increased energy levels and significantly lower risks of developing cardiovascular conditions.

Health professionals and researchers have noted striking parallels between the manifestations of aging and the effects of a sedentary lifestyle. Consequently, they have concluded that exercise not only enhances fitness but also mitigates the symptoms of aging. Below is a comprehensive list outlining the myriad benefits of exercise physiology:

Learn more about your body

A session with our exercise physiologists offers more than just insights into lesser-known body parts; it empowers you to optimize their function through a diverse range of conditioning exercises.

Improve psychological health

Exercise physiology offers profound benefits for psychological well-being, supported by numerous studies highlighting the positive impact of exercise on mental health. Our specialists are dedicated to not only assisting you in reaching your physical goals but also fostering your psychological development. They achieve this by enhancing:

  • Your mood
  • Coping skills
  • Clarity
  • Cognitive function NDIS funding

Improved cardiovascular health

Physiology typically delves into the unseen biology of our bodies. Exercise physiology, in particular, offers a plethora of benefits to our physiological well-being, particularly in enhancing cardiovascular health.

Consistent exercise has been shown to augment the size and efficiency of the heart muscle, leading to improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol profiles, and overall reduction in the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Learn proper technique

Proper technique is crucial for achieving success in any exercise regimen. Inadequate form during workouts or when using sports equipment not only raises the risk of injury and discomfort but also diminishes the effectiveness of your training. Our exercise physiologists employ evidence-based strategies to refine your technique, promoting peak performance while reducing the risk of injury.

You’re your own boss

Your exercise physiologist operates distinctively from a personal trainer. You won’t find them demanding your presence at 5 am or barking instructions. Rather, they focus on aiding you in managing your condition through personalized physical rehabilitation. Tailored specifically to your needs, these individualized strategies empower you with a heightened sense of control over your body.

Is Exercise And Sports
Physiology Right For You?

Aside from athletic development for those who want to improve their performance during sports, exercise physiology can be used to assist those who:

  • Have an underlying chronic condition – Living with a chronic medical condition can impact your life in multiple ways, from medication management to avoiding your risk of comorbidities. Our accredited exercise physiologists understand these complexities and will prescribe safe and effective rehabilitation programs to help improve your condition.
  • Have chronic pain – Pain that persists for longer than 3 months is referred to as chronic pain. This can occur following a traumatic injury or due to an underlying condition. Our experts will work with you to increase your strength, function, and mobility to help improve your quality of life.
  • Recovering from surgery – Once you have had your intervention with a physiotherapist, they may refer you to an exercise physiologist to enhance your recovery and teach you a variety of exercises to prevent re-injury.
  • Unhappy with their body changes during pregnancy – Exercise is recommended during all phases of life, including pregnancy. However, wrong techniques can prove to be detrimental to you and your baby. Our exercise physiologists will devise various strength and conditioning programs that are safe for both you and your baby.
  • Athletes who want to improve their strength and conditioning – Our experts have the skills and knowledge to devise musculoskeletal rehabilitation programs for athletes who wish to recover from injury faster and learn how to prevent further injury.

How Can Exercise Physiology Help You?

Our team’s knowledge, skills, and competencies can help design and deliver individual exercise programs to tackle the following conditions:

  • Diabetes Management – Adopting a regular exercise program is critical to help with your diabetes management. It will improve blood sugar control, reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease and improve your overall well-being.
  • Lower back pain – Exercise can help strengthen your back, relieve pain, and possibly reduce the need for medications.
  • Weight loss – both aerobic and anaerobic exercises are fantastic to help you lose weight. Weight loss can considerably reduce your risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Osteoarthritis – as we age, our joints can become more susceptible to degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. Our exercise physiologists can help you strengthen and condition your joints to prevent further damage and injury caused by the wear and tear of your knee joint.
  • Strength – strength exercises can help sculpt your body and reduce your body fat.
  • Injury – anyone who has sustained an injury during work or playing a sport can benefit from exercise physiology. We will assess your level of movement, strength, and function, and devise a program that will help rehabilitate you and get you back on your feet.
  • Cardiovascular Disease – the risk of cardiovascular disease is significantly reduced by increasing exercise and physical activity.
  • Fitness – our team can help you achieve your fitness goal by providing a detailed management program that focuses on reducing your heart rate and increasing your stamina.
